PEAC will be at the Exotic Bird Fair Expo in Erie on Saturday 8/20

The Pittsburgh affiliate of The Parrot Education and Adoption Center (PEAC) will be at the Exotic Bird Fair Expo in Erie, PA on Saturday, August 20, 2011.  You are invited to join us there between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.  There will be a diverse assortment of vendors with birds, bird toys, foods, and other related supplies.  We will have a table with bird keeping, and lovely parrot themed gift items for sale.  We will also be running the kitchen and snack sales to help fund our educational programs and parrot rehoming activities.

The Parrot Education and Adoption Center (PEAC) was founded in San Diego, CA in 1996, to promote the highest quality of education about parrot keeping, and also facilitate the rehoming of parrots that have lost their homes, into appropriate new homes where they will receive proper care.  Besides Pittsburgh, PEAC has affiliates in several states.

The Pittsburgh affiliate of The Parrot Education and Adoption Center (PEAC) was established in 1998 and is run entirely by volunteers.  Attending events such as this fair, helps us raise funds to continue to offer our services.  We thank Ohio Bird Fair Expo for their generous donation of table space, the food concession, and the opportunity to meet with so many nice people with an interest in parrots and their well being.

The Basic Care and Training class at the National Aviary at Pittsburgh will be at 1:30 PM instead of 10:00 AM.  This time change is to allow a group of veterinary tech students to attend our class.    As the admission fee for the class also includes admission to the Aviary for the whole day, you can come earlier and visit the other displays and attractions then come join us at 1:30.  The class should take about 1.5 to 2 hours.  The National Aviary at Pittsburgh opens for the day at 10:00 AM.  Representatives of PEAC will be present to answer questions about the organization and discuss the adoption program, volunteer, and bird fostering opportunities.

You can pre-register for this class, to guarantee that a space will be available at:

Board of Directors’ Meeting-Open Meeting

The quarterly meeting for the Board of Directors will be held this Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 1:30pm until 2:30pm in Cranberry Twp., Pa.  The address is 7000 Stonewood Dr. Wexford, PA 15090

It’s the office park behind Atria’s on Route 19. If you are coming from the south, go up I-79 to exit 75 (Warrendale). Then go back south on route 19. That’s a lot easier than using the Wexford exit.
Look for the 7000 building (it’s the last one in the back of the office park).  The best thing to do is drive around behind the building, park in back, and come in the entrance by the gazebo. The conference room is in suite 110. The outside doors will probably be locked, so I will watch for you and let you in.
There will be discussion concerning the past quarter, the current and future direction of PEAC: to include filling of a vacant seat on the Board of Directors by Steve Sarro, Director of Animal Programs at the National Aviary.
All are invited to attend.

PEAC and The National Aviary Announce Partnership

Parrot Education & Adoption Center is excited to announce that we will be partnering this year with the National Aviary.  This partnership gives each entity a new and unique opportunity to further their missions.  Starting on January 15th the National Aviary’s Training Manager, Cathy Schlott, will be teaching two seminars at their facility on the North Side.  Cathy currently oversees the training and care of more than 60 education and show birds and actively manages a full-time staff of six bird show trainers.  Cathy has experience training and working with a wide variety of birds, from small toucans and parrots to bald eagles.

The first of these seminars is entitled, “Basic Care and Behavior”.  The class will cover some common behavior issues that parrot owners have with these birds in the home and information on healthy diets and basic care practices.  This seminar will be held starting January 15th and continuing every other month.  The second seminar is entitled, “Enrichment”.  In this workshop, we will discuss different kinds of enrichment and techniques that you can use with your own birds. Included in the workshop is the opportunity to make an enrichment item to take home. The “Enrichment” seminar will begin on February 12th and continue every other month.  There is a charge of $25.00 for these seminars ($20.00 for PEAC or Aviary Members).  This fee includes all day admission to the Aviary.

These seminars will meet the requirements for adopting, foster training, and volunteer curricula required by PEAC.  PEAC volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about adoption, distribute literature, accept memberships and showcase birds available for adoption.
