Unfortunately, we only had two people pre-register for the seminar. There will be a basic care and behavior problem seminar at the National Aviary on October 15, 2011 and another enrichment seminar in November. We have also added a couple more seminars for the fall, including a great family entertainment venue from John “That Guy With The Birds” Lege. Please check our seminar page for more information. Pre-registration, although not required does assist us in preparing for and making seminars available.

Location: Squirrel Hill Library after Basic Care Seminar (3:30-ish)
PEAC is a professional volunteer organization. In so being it is absolutely dependant on its volunteers! I have made a commitment to retain as many current volunteers as possible, to recover any former resignees, and to recruit responsible, willing new volunteers. I aim to increase the transparency of the organization, decentralize tasks, and allow our volunteers to be as active as they choose to be in both the active ‘pounding the pavement’ tasks as well as the decision making process. ANY amount of time, ANY skill a person is willing to give is a treasure that will be greatly appreciated.
This is the statement I made after intitially taking over PEAC. Until now, PEAC has been focused on changing locations, adding to its curricula, maintaining and improving its adoption process. In order for these to move further and to promote our existence, I need to focus on volunteerism. I had wanted to focus on volunteerism earlier than now, but have not been successful. Better nate than lever! There are several positions that need to be filled that will require some time, as well as positions that are equally important, but require less time.
Additionally, I would like to have as many opinions as possible at this meeting to provide feedback on where we are and where we need to go in the future. Your voice is important.
Please join me at the Squirrel Hill Library on Saturday, June 25, 2011 for a very important volunteer meeting . This meeting is open to ANY member or potential member who thinks they might want to donate time or talent of any kind to PEAC, Pittsburgh. Even if you’re just curious, please join us.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of pre-registration we will be cancelling the “Enrichment” Seminar due to be held tomorrow, June 4, 2011 at the National Aviary. We will be moving this seminar topic to the July 23, 2011 date at the National Aviary.

The quarterly meeting for the Board of Directors will be held this Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 1:30pm until 2:30pm in Cranberry Twp., Pa. The address is 7000 Stonewood Dr. Wexford, PA 15090
It’s the office park behind Atria’s on Route 19. If you are coming from the south, go up I-79 to exit 75 (Warrendale). Then go back south on route 19. That’s a lot easier than using the Wexford exit.
Look for the 7000 building (it’s the last one in the back of the office park). The best thing to do is drive around behind the building, park in back, and come in the entrance by the gazebo. The conference room is in suite 110. The outside doors will probably be locked, so I will watch for you and let you in.
There will be discussion concerning the past quarter, the current and future direction of PEAC: to include filling of a vacant seat on the Board of Directors by Steve Sarro, Director of Animal Programs at the National Aviary.
All are invited to attend.

We have added a change of day and time to help accommodate those who can’t make Saturdays. Please visit the registration page (Click Here) for times, locations, subjects and speakers.
Held at: Robert Morris University, Patrick Henry Center (Hopwood Hall) on Saturday, January 29th at 10:00AM.
PEAC is very excited to have Dr. Edward Bennett on-board to give this seminar. Dr. Edward Bennett of All Pet Animal Hospital is PEAC Pittsburgh’s consulting avian veterinarian. As a child growing up in Pittsburgh, Dr. Bennett knew he wanted to be a veterinarian. He lived in Highland Park near the Pittsburgh Zoo, where he spent summers and vacations in high school and college working with the veterinarians. His educational background is wide-ranging, including a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, a BS in Animal Science from Pennsylvania State University, and a BSA in Biology from the University of Georgia, where he also received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Although Dr. Bennett originally intended to practice medicine in zoos, he realized he would miss small animals and started practicing small and exotic animal medicine in Savannah, Georgia in 1989. Twelve years ago he bought All Pet Animal Hospital in Gibsonia, PA and opened a second office three years ago in Sarver, PA. Dr. Bennett loves the exotics and studied avian care and diseases in veterinary school and many seminars since earning his DVM.
Dr. Bennett joins PEAC Pittsburgh to educate parrot owners on avian care and illness.

Parrot Education & Adoption Center is excited to announce that we will be partnering this year with the National Aviary. This partnership gives each entity a new and unique opportunity to further their missions. Starting on January 15th the National Aviary’s Training Manager, Cathy Schlott, will be teaching two seminars at their facility on the North Side. Cathy currently oversees the training and care of more than 60 education and show birds and actively manages a full-time staff of six bird show trainers. Cathy has experience training and working with a wide variety of birds, from small toucans and parrots to bald eagles.
The first of these seminars is entitled, “Basic Care and Behavior”. The class will cover some common behavior issues that parrot owners have with these birds in the home and information on healthy diets and basic care practices. This seminar will be held starting January 15th and continuing every other month. The second seminar is entitled, “Enrichment”. In this workshop, we will discuss different kinds of enrichment and techniques that you can use with your own birds. Included in the workshop is the opportunity to make an enrichment item to take home. The “Enrichment” seminar will begin on February 12th and continue every other month. There is a charge of $25.00 for these seminars ($20.00 for PEAC or Aviary Members). This fee includes all day admission to the Aviary.
These seminars will meet the requirements for adopting, foster training, and volunteer curricula required by PEAC. PEAC volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about adoption, distribute literature, accept memberships and showcase birds available for adoption.
