Parrot Enrichment Class at the National Aviary @ Pittsburgh, PA

A class on enrichment of Parrots and other hookbill birds is being presented on SATURDAY, September 24, 2011 at 10:00 AM. It is being held at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Commons West, 700 Arch Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212      412-323-7235.

The class will be presented by one of the trainers from the Aviary and a hands on workshop, in which you will have the opportunity to construct and take home an appropriate toy for your bird, at no additional cost, will be conducted by a representative of the Pittsburgh affiliate of the Parrot Education and Adoption Center (PEAC).

True Parrots and other hookbill birds, such as Macaws, Cockatoos, Conures, Lories, Parakeets, Cockatiels, Lovebirds, and others are intelligent beings who need adequate intellectual stimulation to be successful companions and to maintain their health. This class discusses the environmental conditions, and appropriate activities and toys that will positively influence the well being and good quality of life for your bird(s) and you.

This course is a product of a cooperative partnership between the National Aviary at Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh affiliate of the Parrot Education and Adoption Center (PEAC). The National Aviary is known throughout the world for it’s collection of birds and it’s trained bird shows. PEAC was founded in San Diego in 1996, to promote the highest quality of education on how to properly care for companion hookbill birds and facilitate the successful rehoming of parrot type birds who have lost their homes, to new homes where they will receive proper care. PEAC has affiliated chapters in several states.

The Pittsburgh affiliate of PEAC is run entirely by volunteers and is an IRS class 501C(3) charitable organization. Representatives will be present to discuss the activities of PEAC, the birds available for adoption, and volunteer and home fostering opportunities.

Tuition of $25.00 for this program includes admission to the National Aviary for the entire day, the class and toy making workshop at 10:00 AM, and the toy(s) you will make. Members of the Aviary and/or PEAC receive a $5.00 discount. It is helpful to us if you pre-register for this event so that sufficient materials can be assured, however, you will be just as welcome if you come without pre-registering. http://www.pitpeac.org/seminars2.php

The house wins with KENO!

If you are looking for a Blue and Gold Macaw, there’s no gamble with Keno.  He’s a nice boy and at 12, is entering adulthood well.  As Blue and Gold macaws go, he’s not particularly large, he’s nicely formed, nicely colored, and you can dance with him.  There’s nothing wrong with this boy!

“There, There”, Baby, Everything’s Fine

Baby, the Bare Eyed Cockatoo, doesn’t just live in the here and now, he’s interested in what’s happening, “there”, as well.  With Baby in your home, you’ll have to be aware of ,”there”, because he’ll greet it (“Hello, There”), and refer to it frequently.  When he’s not “there”, but is, “here”, he likes to dance.  He’s an amiable boy, a dancing fool, and not cranky, at all.
