What Kind of Parrot Should I Get?

What do macaws, conures, parrots, cockatoos, parakeets, cockatiels, lories, lovebirds, caiques, parrotlets, kakarikies, rosellas, and keas have in common?

They’re all different kinds of birds, that are commonly called, “parrots”.  There is great variety within the kinds of birds that are called, “parrots” and the different species have different feeding, housing, and other environmental needs.

Though each and every bird is an individual, with their own preferences and temperment, different species tend to have characteristics typical of what they are, before they show their individuality, by who they are.

What kind of parrot, if any, is right for you?

“That Guy With the Birds” on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012

John Lege, known professionally as, “That Guy With the Birds”, will present a class on how he trains and socializes the birds he takes into his flock and uses in his performances.  John is well known for his interesting and informative shows and classes on parrot keeping.  Many of the birds in his flock have come from extreme, terrible, conditions and when he acquired them, were not  pet or companion animal quality as a result of their previous mistreatment.

Executive Director Search

In the past two years the Pittsburgh chapter of the Parrot Education and Adoption Center has made tremendous strides under the leadership of our Executive Director, Scott Reichert. Our organization has become financially stable and has reestablished good relations with other parrot rescue organizations as well as with avian professionals, retailers, and the National Aviary. We have established a stable infrastructure that offered education to ALL parts of the city and re-homes birds effectively. We have also instituted and are following a better set of avian guidelines, including proper quarantine procedures, than was ever before envisioned.

Scott will now be moving to a newly created position on the Board of Directors of PEAC, serving as a volunteer coordinator and liaison to the board. In order to continue with the PEAC mission of providing education to the public and the rescue and fostering of unwanted birds, the Board will be conducting a search for a new Executive Director. This person will work closely with Scott in the coming months to facilitate a transition. As we now have an excellent staff of volunteer coordinators who are responsible for much of the ongoing activities of PEAC, it is the Board’s intent that the Executive Director’s background will encompass more leadership and organizational qualities than avian experience.

The requirements for the position are as follows:

  • Organizational skills, including:
    • Ability to recruit, coordinate and manage volunteers
    • Sound leadership, communication and people skills
    • Ability to coordinate or manage volunteers regarding the following tasks:
      • Website activities including coordination with Webmaster
      • Advertising and public relations activities
      • Fundraising activities
      • Grant writing activities
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office – Word and Excel
  • Experience with Quickbooks accounting software, or willing to learn

Those individuals interested in a challenging and rewarding experience as an Executive Director should respond with a Letter of Interest to the Board of Directors at the following e-mail address directors@pitpeac.org. The letter should include a brief biography and qualifications as they relate to the list above. Any questions regarding the Letter of Interest can also be forwarded to the e-mail address listed above. All letters of Interest should be submitted by August 26, 2012.

Thank you for your consideration.
